Aims:
To provide a broad exploration of virology, with the emphasis on a modern molecular
approach to the subject. Particular attention will be paid to strategies of viral
replication and the pathogenesis of viral diseases.
Objectives:
At the completion of the course, students are expected to:
- demonstrate an awareness of the main principles of virology, having assimilated
detailed information on each of the major groups of vertebrate viruses and
be able to explain the key concepts
- describe current key areas of advance in virology, including:
- viruses and cancer
- AIDS
- prion diseases
- demonstrate the capacity for critical scientific analysis of issues in virology
- access appropriate scientific literature and demonstrate the capacity to
analyse and criticise evidence gathered
- communicate in writing an awareness of concepts and debates in virology
- demonstrate the potential for life-long learning, use of C&IT, the capacity
to access a variety of resource materials and effective time management
