Can you advise me on a medical condition affecting me or a member of my family?
I'm sorry but I'm a research scientist and not a physician. Also, the risk of medical malpractice limits my ability to answer your question. I wish that I could be of more assistance. There are a great deal of medically-related resources on this server and on the internet, and I would suggest that you search them for links that might be of interest to you and relevant to your questions. I also strongly suggest that you contact your physician for specific medical information.

I have to write an essay/report/thesis on xyz. Please could you send me some more information on this topic?
There is a great deal of information on this server and on the Internet, and I would suggest that you search for links that might be of interest to you. I'm not going to do your homework for you. Also, please read this.

Can I get academic credit for studying your courses?
While this University does run a number of distance learning courses, this Department does not currently offer any online courses. However, you are very welcome to read and study all the documents online in your own time. I would also suggest that you get a copy of:

Principles of Molecular Virology
(Amazon.co.UK)

around which several courses are based and read this in conjunction with the documents online.

Can I link to/use the information on your server?
All the material at this site is copyright (ownership is indicated by a link from each document). I am usually happy to give permission for the material to be used for non-profitmaking educational purposes and to negotiate a fee for non-exclusive copyright for commercial projects. If you simply want to use a diagram for any non-commercial purpose such as an essay or a report which will not be published in any form (electronic or print), you do not have to ask my permission, just cite the URL of the original in your report (e.g. http://www-micro.msb.le.ac.uk/335/Adeno1.gif). It is generally accepted in science that it is acceptable to reproduce a small proportion of an original work, e.g. a sentence or a single diagram, as long as the idea/data/information is clearly credited to the original source. Not to do so is plagiarism (the repetition or rephrasing of someone else's work without proper acknowledgement).

How should I reference the information on your server?
Cite the original source of any information taken from published material. In the case of web pages, cite the URL of the page (e.g. http://www-micro.msb.le.ac.uk/AJC/FAQ.html).

Can I download material from your server and mirror it on my local site?
No. All the material at this site is copyright but freely available from our server. Copyright infringement is theft and may result in legal action being taken.

I would like to work/study in your Laboratory/Department/University - please can you tell me how to proceed?
I do not currently have any places available in my laboratory. Most jobs are advertised in New Scientist or Nature when they become available. All applications to study as an undergraduate/postgraduate at the University of Leicester must be processed by the relevant University office (click on the appropriate link).
